YEAH!!!!!! I HAVE FINALLY FOUND TIME TO POST!!!!!!!!! WHOO-HOO!!!!!!!!!!
When we arrived at Jacob’s house, Onyx and I pretended everything was normal. We got into our pajamas and said goodnight to Mom and Dad, who went off to bed. We walked into the living room to find Jacob stretched out on the couch, out for the count.
I rolled my eyes at his sleeping figure. “I guess we’re sharing the air mattress, huh?” I said to Onyx, smiling shyly.
“It’s just as well, I’m not letting you out of my sight until we get this leech problem straightened out.” He crept up behind me and wrapped his arms around me. I was led to the air mattress. We were laying down on it, me snuggling closer to Onyx’s warm, bare chest. Finally, the silence was broken. “What do you think she meant?” he asked. We both knew who ‘she’ was.
“Um, well, the Olympic coven is the Cullens, so I think she meant that we have to go to the Cullens’ house tomorrow like we did today, or else they would go looking for me.”
“Yeah, I kinda figured that. But what did she mean, ‘We have much to discuss’?”
I shrugged. “Most likely she was referring to my being a human caught up in the supernatural.” I could feel Onyx tense.
“I am not letting those bloodsuckers turn you into one of them. And I’ll rip them to shreds if they even consider hurting you,” he whispered forcefully.
I began to rub his arm soothingly in an effort to calm him down. “We should go to sleep now. Please don’t worry too much and try to sleep, okay?”
“No promises about not worrying, but for your sake I’ll try to calm down a little.”
If we were together, which we weren’t, this would be the part where he kissed me goodnight. But we weren’t, so he didn’t.
Love ya, Onyx. I thought wearily. Out loud I said “G’night, Onyx.”
I thought I heard someone whisper “I love you too.” but I wasn’t sure.
I fell asleep to the sound of Onyx’s heart beating.
* * *
The next morning, Jacob, Onyx and I arrived at the Cullens’ mansion at 9:00am. This time, the Cullens were not alone. With them were members of what was known as the Volturi. I recognized the leaders, Aro, Marcus and Caius. With them was Jane, her brother Alec, Demetri the tracker, Felix, along with other members of the guard.
Aro stepped forward and greeted me like I was his long--lost daughter. “My dear, so glad you could make it! What a pleasure, to finally meet you in person!”
Onyx growled, moving to place himself between Aro and I. Aro didn’t seem particularly scared of the horse sized wolf in front of him. “And Onyx too, how wonderful! Why don’t you change back so we can converse properly, hm?”
I turned away, blushing profusely as Onyx returned to his human form. When I looked again, he wasn’t wearing anything but a pair of shorts.
Aro clapped his hands together. “Alright, my friends! Let’s get down to business, shall we?”
I arched an eyebrow. “What business is there to get down to, exactly?” it was the first time I had spoken to the Volturi. “Do you pay a visit to every werewolf’s imprint, or am I just special?”
That’s my girl. Onyx thought-spoke. I grinned at him. Onyx’s girl. It had a nice ring to it.
Aro ignored my question, instead turning to beam at Onyx. “You Imprinted? Really? Congratulations! Imprinting is an honor among your kind, or so I have heard.”
Onyx reached behind his back and grasped my hand. His eyes never left Aro. “Well, yeah, I suppose you could say I imprinted, with some variations.”
Aro raised his eyebrows. “Care to clarify?”
“Well, imprinting is more of a physical thing, as in, you imprint on the girl when you first see her. But for CJ and I, it’s different. The first time we met was in a dream we both had at the exact same time. We dreamt that I saved her from two newborns that tried to attack her. Also, CJ and I are telepathic, but only with each other. So, my theory is we are a mental version of imprinting.
“Ah, of course. I understand.” Aro nodded knowingly. As if he could ever possibly understand my feelings for Onyx.
“Well, it’s been good to see you, Aro, but I understand that you have other matters to attend to elsewhere, so—“ Carlisle started when he was cut off by Caius.
“Wait a moment, Aro. How can we be sure what they say is true?”
“By simply touching either Onyx’s wrist or mine he can see that we aren’t lying.” I pointed out.
“I can merely see what you thought, dear CJ. I have no way of knowing whether or not what you think to be the truth is really the truth at all.”
“Our tie is as true as every other imprinting, but I don’t see you questioning them!” Onyx said angrily.
“That is because the other imprintees are not a threat to our secrecy. Being the first mental imprinting, we have nothing to compare you to, therefore whether or not it would be safe to allow you to live is a mystery.”
“If I may, I would like to contribute to this riveting debate.” All head turned to Marcus. “Aro, Caius, you say that it would be unwise to allow CJ to remain human because we are unsure as to whether or not it is safe to let a human know of our existence when she and the shape-shifter’s form of so-called “imprinting” is new to both vampires and werewolves, correct?”
“That is indeed correct, Marcus. Pray tell, where are you going with this?”
“We are all aware of my ability to sense relationships, yes? Well, I can see the strength of CJ and Onyx’s beginning relationship. If the problem does in fact lie in the uncertainty of their bond, rest assured you have nothing to fear.” He was sticking up for us against Aro and Caius. I couldn’t believe it. I was overflowing with gratefulness towards this ancient vampire.
But one glance at Caius’ face pretty much drained me of all relief. He was up to something. I wasn’t sure what, but I had a sickening feeling that I would find out.
“I believe that you failed to mention one detail in your compelling argument.” He sneered. “The girl is a telekinesis, a power unknown to us. Who’s to say she isn’t unstable and dangerous? She could snap at any time. Leaving her human could endanger us all.”
Onyx pulled me closer so I was pressed against his side. “Her powers were only recently discovered, but they couldn’t have appeared without any warning at all. She was probably harboring her skill all of her life, and it just took something big like imprinting to start it up.”
“True, very true. I suppose I can’t hold your powers against you, as they were as much of a surprise to you as they are to us. However,” he leaned in closer, so his face was right in front of mine, “I would like to make an offer. How would you,” he paused for dramatic effect, “like to join the Volturi?”
“Y-you’re asking me if I w-want to become a v-vampire?”
“My dear, that is exactly what I am asking.”
Join the Volturi? Me? Was her serious? The answer was instantaneous. “As flattering as that is, Aro, I have to reject your kind offer.” Real kind. I was no idiot. All he wanted was to make a weapon out of me.
“Are you sure? You really could be quite useful to us.”
Onyx snorted. “Useful how? Is the vampire king too lazy to get things for himself? Or does he need a young girl to get everything for him, now?”
If it had been anyone else but the Volturi, I would have scolded Onyx for his rudeness. But I had to admit, Aro really deserved that.
Aro, however, looked as serene as ever. Stupid too-happy vampire. “You are aware of Chelsea’s power, yes? She can change the emotions of others around her to manipulate their loyalties. A very handy skill, rest assured. But if we had CJ, we wouldn’t need other to lay their loyalties to us when we could get them to physically do whatever we wanted them to do. Do you understand?”
Um, can you spell ‘megalomaniac’? “Oh, I understand perfectly. Do you understand that I will never join the Volturi guard under any circumstances?”
Aro smiled sadly. “I see. If you ever have a change of heart, do let me know.”
“Aro, I will never have a change of heart,” I vowed, smiling up at Onyx. I could tell he understood what my words meant by the grin on his face.
“Very disappointing. We could certainly use you, CJ.”
At this point a member of the guard I hadn’t recognized earlier jumped up, livid. “Aro! How could you ever even consider replacing me with this human?!” at once I understood that this was Chelsea.
“Chelsea, dear, I would never replace you. I was simply stating that CJ could be useful to us in ways you can’t be. It isn’t your fault.” He murmured soothingly.
“NO! You said we would need people’s loyalties when we could get them to physically do whatever we wanted them to! That means you find me superfluous! You don’t think you need me anymore!”
“Of course you aren’t superfluous, Chelsea. And CJ very politely declined our offer, so you don’t have anything to worry about.” Chelsea slunk back to her position between Demetri and Jane. If looks could kill, I would be dead 10 times over.
“Well, it seems that everything is taken care of. Good day, CJ, Carlisle.” And with that, the Volturi glided back into the thicket of woods.
“Well, that’s it. It’s all over. Now you have nothing to worry about anymore, CJ. It’s all over.” Onyx pulled me into a warm hug.
No. As Chelsea turned back to glower at me one last time, I knew, and I think Onyx did too, that the battle was not yet over. The worst was still to come.
