My Weirdo Friends and I

hey, guys. this is the first chapter of my new Percy Jackson and the Olympians fanfic, title to be decided. this chapter is basically just an introduction, just so you can get to know some of the main characters. 

before i give you the chapter, i just want to let you know that since you guys are too lazy to bother clicking a stinkin' mouse, and nikki's idea for "other" was for me to go to Hell (like she's one to talk), i guess i'll have to look for some more graphics.

yes. on with the chapter!

     “Hey, Diana! Guess what?!” Fern bounced up to me, jumping around like a bullfrog. I yawned and slumped down onto the cafeteria bench.

            “Fern, I’ve told you this before. It’s practically criminal to be excited about anything at 7:30 on a Monday. My brain doesn’t function properly this early in the morning, remember?”

            “When does your brain ever function properly?” I was smacked lightly in the back of my head. I turned around.

            “Shut up, Fleet,” I smiled and slapped him lightly on the arm.

            Fleetwood, or Fleet for short, was Fern’s twin brother. They were both very tall and thin, and though they were in 7^th grade like me, they looked to be about 15. They both had curly, thick brown hair, though Fern’s trailed down her back like a curtain. Her eyes were a pretty, sparkling green. His were a deep, piercing blue.

Fern was the more optimistic of the two. Scratch that, she was the most optimistic of us all. She had a bubbly disposition and tended to see the better side of situations. She was always smiling and was forever looking out for the well being of her friends. She could be seen as the ‘mother’ of the group in that way.

Fleet was pretty much the polar opposite. He sometimes had trouble seeing the good in people as well as situations and was basically a pessimist. He was very sarcastic with a couple of teachers as well as most of the students, which usually landed him in detention at least once a week. Not that those teachers didn’t deserve it, he just needs to know when it’s the right time to shoot your mouth off and when it isn’t. Aside from that, Fleet was very smart and good pretty good grades in almost every class. He was better looking than every 6^th, 7^th and 8^th grade boy in the school, and well… he wasn’t exactly oblivious to it. The self-centered jerk.

 They were two of my best friends in the entire world.

            My third best friend was walking towards us right then. Rusty was short, maybe 4 feet, 8 inches, with short auburn hair and friendly brown eyes. We had known each other since we were 5, though we hadn’t gone to the same school until 6^th grade. He was really funny and loved to tell jokes. His area of expertise was making people laugh.

            Who am I? I’m Diana Rue. I have long, jet-black hair with silver streaks. No, not gray, silver. And no, I didn’t dye it. As long as I can remember, I’ve had silver streaks in my hair. I don’t know why. Everyone asks me where I got them, and I just tell them I dyed my hair. It’s just so much easier than telling them pieces of my hair just miraculously turned silver. The only people I’ve told are Rusty, Fern and Fleet, because I would trust them with my life. My eyes are a stormy gray, my skin a pale creamish color.

            Like Fleet, I’m extremely sarcastic, but unlike Fleet, when it comes to teachers, I don’t get caught, therefore I don’t get in trouble. I’m very skilled with my hands. I can play piano, knit, anything that requires finger work, I can do. I’m very athletic. I’m on the girls volleyball team, girls track team and girls basketball team. The only reason I’m not captain of one or all of these teams is because I don’t want to be. I prefer a ‘silent-but-deadly’ tactic, and that’s a bit hard if you’re the team captain.

            As different as the four of us are, there’s one thing that draws us all together: Greek Mythology. I don’t know why, but I’m crazy about the stuff. It’s really weird, since I’ve been told I don’t have a drop of Greek blood in my body.

            “So what was it you were so excited about?” I asked Fern after Rusty had sat down with us.

            “Oh, well, yesterday, Fleetwood and I went to the bookstore—“

            “Correction, I was dragged against my will to the bookstore.”

            “Same difference. Anyway I saw this, and I just had to get it!” Out of her backpack she pulled out a thick book on Greek mythology.

            “Sweet!” Rusty pumped his fist in the air.

            “I can’t wait to read this—“ BEEEEEEEEP. “Right after gym class.”
